"All my Christmases came at once. The Best Christmas ever, this home changed my life"
Trevor, tenant.
The Consolidated Almshouse Charity of Swanscombe has been around for over 130 years, supporting the local community with housing.
In 2024, they were able to build a new development on their land, creating three 1-bedroom properties for over-55s in the area.
Their garden is still in progress but already a beautiful space. They’re growing fruits and vegetables, which the residents tend to with the support of a regular gardener. The corn, tomatoes, apples, strawberries and more provide fresh food for the residents and any surplus goes to the senior citizens’ lunch club.
The properties themselves have been built to a very high standard, with energy efficiency considered across the build, from the underfloor heating to the solar panels in the roof.
The tenants all moved into the properties in December 2024and QHT met two of them during a visit in July 2025. Both residents seemed really happy and settled in and have a good relationship with the Swanscombe Alms trustees, who are very involved with the project.
What our support means to Swanscombe Alms
Glen [chair of trustees] is over the moon, the charity now has additional properties to support more residents within the local community but the trustee board now has additional skills to help plan and build out more properties to help even more people and grow the charity.
